Measurement of Dissolved Oxygen in Swamp Waters. Further Modification of the Winkler Method

چکیده

INTRODUCTION There have been several modifications of the original Winkler method for the estimation of dissolved oxygen (Winkler, 1888) designed to overcome the sources of error due to the presence of oxidizing and reducing substances in natural waters and industrial wastes. In the course of work on tropical swamps we have been interested in the amount of oxygen in water which not only may contain large quantities of organic matter, ferrous or ferric iron, nitrites and other disturbing substances, but may also be deeply coloured or charged with sediment to give anything from a slightly turbid to a densely muddy liquid. For such water none of the modifications so far described is satisfactory. It does not in fact appear that any independent check has been made on the absolute accuracy of any of these modifications, though the reliability of the original method has been proved by Wheatland & Smith (1955) by comparison with gasometric analysis of distilled water and sea water. An attempt is made to assess the absolute accuracy of the method described in this paper.

The Determination of Total Carbon Dioxide in Water

Compared with oxygen the estimation of carbon dioxide in water presents much greater difficulties, and the methods published until now do not approach in sensitivity the Winkler method for dissolved oxygen by which the latter can be measured to 0-02 mg./l. in unpolluted and 0-2 mg./l. in polluted natural waters (Wheatland & Smith, 1955, Beadle, 1958). This is partly due to the high solubility a...

Spectrophotometric Winkler determination of dissolved oxygen: re-examination of critical factors and reliability

The spectrophotometric iodine measurement for oxygen determination by the Winkler method is reexamined for theoretical and operational aspects. It is shown that the selection of an isobestic point for measuring the mixture of iodine and tri-iodide in the solution enhances reliability. The wavelength value of 466 nm was selected after a spectrum study. Then, performances are assessed by mean of ...

Limnol. Oceanogr., 44(4), 1999, 1148–1154

Several researchers have proposed spectrophotometric modifications of the Winkler titrimetric method for measuring dissolved oxygen (DO). These modifications, although simple, are not widely used because of concern about accuracy, calibration, and possible sources of interference. Here we show, using natural samples from lakes and rivers as well as samples manipulated in the laboratory, that th...

Reproductive seasonality in a swamp-locked African cichlid

This study quantified the seasonal pattern of reproduction in a swamp-dwelling population of the African cichlid Pseudocrenilabrus multicolor victoriae. In the hypoxic waters of the Lwamunda Swamp, Uganda, P. multicolor was reproductively active throughout the year, even during the peak of the dry seasons. However, the degree of activity was seasonal, with rainfall providing a predictor of the ...

The Chesapeake Bay Institute Technique for the Winkler Dissolved Oxygen Method

A modified technique for the Winkler determination of dissolved oxygen has been used at the Chesapeake Bay Institute for several years. The modifications result in increased simplicity and speed and reduction in the errors due to manipulation. The unusual features of the technique are the elimination of the volumetric transfer of the final iodine solution and the reagent concentrations. The sou...
